Three Ways to Give Yourself What You Need

or how to nourish your soul

enjoy the little things

Here we are at the end of January. This is the week when all of our plans for ourselves in the new year have either become an ingrained habit, or they have fallen apart. I hope they have become a habit for you.

Either way, this is a good time to check in with yourself.

Are you doing the things that make you happy?

Are you giving yourself time each week to develop the YOU that has taken the back burner on your life for so long? You know the one; she likes to dance, and laugh, and love with passion. Yes! Her! She wants to come to the forefront.

What does she need from you?

Take time each week to listen. She may want to play more, laugh more, dance more. Then, and here is the most important step, give yourself time to do just that!

Last week I took an afternoon to watch a movie that made me laugh. And guess what? The world did not fall apart because I was watching a movie when I could have been doing something else! (gasp!) And because I love to dance, I treated myself to a new workout video that is all about dancing—and it is fun! Now I can’t wait to plug it in on my workout mornings!

What can you do to nourish your soul a little more this week?

Here are some things to help you remember to take care of yourself:

  1. Do the things that make you happy. I don’t know what that is for you, but for me it is laughing, spending time with friends, and dancing!
  2. Be less unhappy/less frustrated/less irritated/less sad. For some people, being happy isn’t easy—and that’s okay. But maybe this week you can be less unhappy. Or not as frustrated, or less irritated or sad. Small steps make a difference. Each small step you take gets you closer to being happier.
  3. Create the future you’ve always dream of. This is so fulfilling!
My husband and I didn’t take a traditional honeymoon when we first got married. Back then we decided we’d like to do an Alaskan Cruise when we could afford it “some time in the future.” When we hit our 20th anniversary, we decided it was time to live the future we dreamed when we were camping in Yellowstone on our honeymoon. Don’t get me wrong, I loved camping for our honeymoon. But I also loved seeing the dream we had come to pass.

You are finally at the stage of life that is the future you dreamed of so many years ago. What are you going to do with it?
